Stay Active Coaching Tip: Speak From the Heart
I like this article because when you speak from the heart you connect with your audience, control your nerves and deliver your best material. The following excerpt is from a presentation by Joseph M. Slye, to be held at the Leadership Training Institute Seminar, hosted by the National League of Cities. Enjoy it!
Leaders are powerless without excellent communication skills. You are much too busy to take the time to make a presentation or give a speech that falls flat, or doesn’t move your audience to action. And public speaking isn’t limited to large crowds and formal presentations — some of the same skills are used in small groups and one-on-one conversations. Most people decide in the first eight seconds whether a particular speaker is worth listening to. Your credibility is at stake.

Stay Active Coaching Tip: How To Express Leadership
I find this to be one of the keys to being an effective leader.
Question: I have recently been promoted to a management position within my company.

I am extremely excited, but I do realize that the promotion comes with many new responsibilities, including leading my co-workers. I don't have much experience speaking as a leader. What is the best way to express leadership?

Stay Active Coaching Tip: How to Take Charge of 2012
Stephen Covey provides six keys to making 2012 your best year ever.
New year, new outlook. Stephen Covey, one of the most prolific leadership authors of our time, says there are six things you can do right now to make 2012 your best year ever:
1. Be proactive.
It's more than just taking initiative. It means being responsible for your own life.
Empower yourself to lead and spread your influence no matter what position
you hold.
you hold.
2. Sharpen the saw.
Decide what's truly important. Sharpen your saw early in the day by learning to
say no to the unimportant and yes to the highly important.
say no to the unimportant and yes to the highly important.
3. Seek to understand before seeking to be understood.
It's human nature to want to be understood, but when both parties are trying to be
understood, neither party is listening. By making the investment to understand
the other party, you can magically transform the course of your conversations.

the other party, you can magically transform the course of your conversations.
4. Begin with the end in mind.
Start today with an image of the end of your life as the frame of reference by which
everything else is examined. With a clear idea of where you are going, examine
everything in the context of what matters to you most.

5. Develop a vision mission statement.
Get a deep sense of your life's mission, purpose and value system, then establish
your goals and a system of accountability that keeps you on track.

6. Think win-win.
There is enough success for everyone, so don't view another person's success as
success achieved at your expense or exclusion.

Stay Active Coaching Tip: Getting Your Hands Dirty in 2012
Leading with the proper mindset, motivation and desire to get results.
The future of American enterprise is heavily dependent upon the mindset, motivation and desire of its leaders. Whether you are a front line manager, director, executive or in the c-suite – 2012 is a defining year for America’s economy. Your commitment to get your “hands dirty” is inextricably linked to the increased performance of workplace leadership.

Stay Active Coaching Tip: How to Stay Focused
This is how I sort things out.
It seems ironic, but in order to “stay active,” I find that first I must “quiet my mind.” Every morning when I wake up I find some quiet time for myself. I do it by praying, meditating, and concentrating on breathing properly. You can do any of the above or simply start by spending some “alone time” with your thoughts. Spending some time in prayer and meditation helps me to organize my thoughts and gives me time to focus on priorities and what I want to accomplish that day. By “being still” I prepare myself to Stay Active!
How do you Stay Active?
